Symposium: ‘All Uses of the Word’ – Teaching Italian Linguistics in Primary Education

The title of the event draws on a famous phrase by Gianni Rodari, who championed the profoundly democratic value of language education: ‘All uses of language for all: it strikes me as a fine motto, with a lovely democratic ring to it. Not because everyone is an artist, but so that no one is a slave’. The teaching of Italian, from Rodari’s perspective, is not merely the transmission of grammatical rules, but a tool for participation, expression and access to citizenship. Recalling this formula therefore means placing the role of primary school and teacher training at the centre, to ensure that every girl and every boy has the opportunity to master the language as a cognitive, cultural and civic resource.
